De Genève à Nazareth

I was born and raised in Geneva, Switzerland, in a French-speaking culture. During my theological studies, I chose to move to Jerusalem to learn Modern Hebrew and study Biblical Geography and Archaeology. This experience transformed my life. I fell in love with Jerusalem and the entire region. During my travels in the area, I met Karim, a Christian Palestinian who holds Israeli citizenship. We married in the summer of 1999 and settled in Nazareth, where I learned Arabic and started our family.

We speak three languages at home: French, English, and Arabic. We also communicate in Hebrew, which is the country’s official language.

We are part of the local Arabic-speaking Catholic church and deeply cherish participating in various religious festivals with local communities in the Holy Land. We are almost always in Bethlehem for Christmas and in Jerusalem for Easter.

Since we met, we have never stopped traveling the roads of the Holy Land—first as a couple, then with our children. My husband specialized in pilgrim transportation. I joined him in managing the business. More recently, we both obtained official guide licenses recognized by the Israeli Ministry of Tourism. This certification crowns years of hands-on experience.

Thanks to my theological training, I have privileged access to Biblical texts. Our deep knowledge of the country and its people allows us to better understand its hidden corners. Alongside our guiding activities, I have practiced iconography for over 30 years.

In recent years, I took on the challenge of rereading the Biblical texts in their original languages—Hebrew and Greek. This renewed reading, combined with my local knowledge, allows me to rediscover certain narratives in new ways.

All these elements come together to enable me to guide anyone wishing to visit the country and discover its diversity.

Since my first stay as a student in Jerusalem (1994–1995), I have practiced iconography in the Ethiopian style. Over the years, I have mastered its simple forms, rounded faces, and large black eyes, which are characteristic of this tradition. My hand knows the shapes and figures I will paint. Over time, I have used different paints: first gouache, then pigments mixed with egg yolk. For several years now, I have used Sennelier’s egg tempera, which comes in tubes, offering both practicality and respect for iconographic tradition.

I position myself in contrast to classical iconographic traditions by creating compositions that do not exist in the established canon. As a theologian, I return to the texts to study them. This theological foundation allows me to use my artistic practice to create new compositions. This approach enables me to paint icons for clients who wish to commemorate a favorite Bible verse for which no traditional icon model exists.

ART

A mix of influences and techniques
Un mélange d'influences et de techniques

As far as I remember I loved tracing lines on paper. When I started studying theology, I was wondering about the visual representation of the sacred as an alternative to the written word. I love doing different sketches to represent people and stories and to make a connection between text and image. So icon painting and illustrations are for me the same way to relate text to image.
